Construction Site Hard-Hat Detection System

This hard-hat detection system is built for construction sites, industrial plants, and other high-risk environments, using image detection to automatically determine whether on-site personnel are correctly wearing a hard hat — reducing risk from human oversight and improving site-safety management efficiency.

Built on an edge-computing architecture, a Jetson device paired with a camera and display is deployed on site, performing image analysis directly on the device so recognition and alerts happen in real time without sending video back to the cloud.

Cameras continuously monitor entrances or work areas; the AI model identifies people and head regions to check compliance with hard-hat requirements. If someone is detected not wearing (or possibly not wearing) a hard hat, the system displays an immediate alert and can trigger an audio-visual warning, ensuring protection is corrected right away.

To handle the lighting, angles, and partial occlusion common on construction sites, the model accounts for a wide range of site conditions so recognition stays stable across different times of day and complex environments. The system can be extended to recognize additional PPE such as safety vests, protective gloves, and face shields as needed, moving site-safety management from single-item detection to integrated multi-PPE management that better matches real on-site requirements.

Beyond real-time alerts, the system generates detection logs and management reports, helping management periodically review compliance rates, violation frequency, and time-of-day distribution — valuable input for future safety audits, training, and external reporting.
